One year after war erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on 15 April 2023, Sudan is facing one of the fastest unfolding crises globally, with unprecedented needs.
Since fighting broke out in April 2023 at least nine million Sudanese have been scattered from their homes. As many as 950,000 may have died, the U.S. envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, has estimated, although he adds that accurate figures are impossible to obtain. About 25.6 million people — more than half of Sudan’s population — face acute hunger. This year’s $2.7 billion Humanitarian Response Plan for Sudan is less than a third funded, with $872 million received as of early August, according to the United Nations.
